Immigration
Do not breach study-permit or visa conditions
HighStudent visa holders must remain enrolled and comply with course-progress and attendance requirements. Work is generally limited to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, with unrestricted hours during scheduled course breaks, subject to the exact visa conditions in VEVO.
Post-arrival
Complete mandatory post-arrival steps
HighComplete enrolment, maintain OSHC, remain actively engaged with the course, monitor attendance and progress, check VEVO, update provider contact details and obtain a TFN before authorised work.
Labour
Check work limits, wages and deductions
HighStudents must follow the 48-hours-per-fortnight limit while study is in session unless a different condition applies. Employers must provide lawful pay and payslips; unpaid trials, cash-only underpayment and excessive deductions are warning signs.
Scam
Avoid fake agents, jobs and accommodation
HighCommon scams include fake CRICOS providers, fake education agents, accommodation listings copied from legitimate websites, and calls claiming to be Home Affairs demanding urgent payment.
Finance
Budget for destination-specific hidden costs
MediumBudget for OSHC, visa charges, health examinations, tuition deposits, rental bond, domestic transport, phone setup, bedding, weather-appropriate clothing and potentially expensive flights within Australia.
Health
Maintain required insurance and health cover
MediumOverseas Student Health Cover must generally be maintained for the required visa period. Check whether ambulance, dental, optical and pre-existing conditions are included, because these can be excluded or limited.
Arrival
Follow customs, biosecurity and medicine controls
MediumAustralia applies strict biosecurity controls. Declare food, plant material, seeds, wood, soil, animal products, outdoor equipment and any item marked on the Incoming Passenger Card. Penalties can apply for failing to declare. Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with the prescription or doctor letter. Some medicines and quantities require prior approval under the traveller exemption or controlled-substance rules.
Emergency
Prepare for disruption and emergencies
MediumBushfires, floods, cyclones, heatwaves and severe storms can disrupt flights, housing and transport. Follow official state emergency warnings and avoid non-refundable travel during active events. Keep secure copies of the passport, visa grant, CoE, OSHC, tenancy agreement and emergency contacts. Save 000, provider security, OSHC, landlord and consular contacts.
